A recurring biblical pattern of testing, dependence, and preparation before a new season of service.
In Scripture
Forty is one of Scripture's clearest recurring time patterns: flood, wilderness, Sinai, prophetic journey, and Christ's temptation. Testing is never the final destination; God forms people there for faithful life beyond it.
“And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.”
Israel's forty years expose the heart and teach dependence in the wilderness.
“And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.”
Elijah travels forty days in strength God provides before hearing the still small voice.
“Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.”
Jesus enters forty days in the wilderness and answers temptation with Scripture.
